The many sounds of memories whooshing by stopped as I broke through the last barrier. I entered what humans would refer to as a Void, a Black Hole. There were no sounds, and the air was neither good nor evil. I tuned my senses, moving noiselessly in this black emptiness, searching for this desperately lonely little girl.
A faint light glimmered in the distance, and I made a beeline straight for it. This being Akari's soul, I was sure that light would be emanating from her, and I was not disappointed.
I finally reached the source of the light. A single rose of purest white stood, its roots fading into the darkness. The flower was weak, that much was easy to see. It was withering, but yet seemed to be struggling to survive. How fitting, that her true form would be this.
Who.... who... what are you? Why are you here?
That same beautiful resonance. It was still weak, but it held a slight wariness and indignation at having her most private space invaded.
"My name is Lord Nisemearle Esevie Et Lyunae D'Raison. I am a being of the higher realm and am seeking a body to inhabit while I traverse this earth."
Our kind usually does not bother with idle chatter, preferring to immediately wrest control from the host. However, with Akari.... Her soul is so pure, such a rarity among these brusque creatures, that I do not wish to just simply destroy it this way. I was hoping to come to some sort of compromise.
"Kodoku Akari, would you like to form a contract with me?"
Her soul's personification perked up, seemingly curious.
"Will I be free from them?"
"I will do anything in my powers."
"Will I have a chance to live as I want?"
"That shall be the reward for you, after I have fulfilled my purpose on this earth."
"Do I need to do anything?"
"No, just loan me your body until my mission is complete. Until then, you can take refuge here while your spiritual wounds heal."
I waited.
"....Take me, release me from this constant terror."
The flower disappeared in a flash of exceedingly bright light, and my vision of the Earthly realm returned, but through Akari's eyes. I flexed the fingers of my new body, feeling the otherworldly strength and spiritual energy filling every crevice in this body. The slight pain in my neck rapidly faded away to nothing.
I glanced to the side, where the father was still fumbling with the gun and muttering to himself. Shifting my vision to the foot of my bed, I saw the mother still slumped over, escaping reality into the welcoming warmth of her dreams.
Sopor, dormire, pro aeternitate.
The incantation escaped my lips in a barely audible whisper, my fingers tracing lines in the air in small, quick motions. The mother's ragged breathing immediately slowed, her consciousness peacefully rocked to sleep in the arms of Death until she completely stopped breathing. Benigne dicis, Magnus Dominusssss, Death hissed before bowing his head and retreating into his realm carrying the woman's soul.
I sat up and stared at the father, so pathetically intoxicated he could barely stand straight, let alone handle a gun. I cleared my throat softly.
Like cornered prey, the father's head whipped around to face me, his finger finally on the trigger. "I THOUGHT I'D KILLED YOU, STUPID BITCH," he yelled, spraying his alcoholic spit, "We all have nothing left anymore, no point, come die with Daddy okay? We can be a happy family on the other side!" He was practically cooing. His demeanor had done a sudden 180, although his finger was still on the trigger.
His trembling had spread to the rest of his body, a bad mix of adrenaline and too much alcohol. His brow was glistening with sweat as he readied the gun, pointing it at me.
The father applied sudden force on the trigger. At the same moment, the gun's barrel spun to face its owner instead of me. Spiritus animo. The father died instantly from the point-blank shot.
I felt a stirring from within me. "Yes, Akari?" I asked, seemingly talking to myself.
Thank you, said the resonance. Involuntarily, though I guess they were hers, tears of relief began to fall.
